Volunteer with the Multicultural Service Center of South Sound

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with the Multicultural Service Center of South Sound (MSCSS)! Our programs are powered by community members who believe in welcoming newcomers, building connection, and supporting lifelong learning.

Why Volunteers Matter

Our English Language Learning and U.S. Citizenship Preparation programs rely on volunteer tutors to create a warm, supportive learning environment for adults and families. As a small and growing organization, volunteers make it possible for us to keep our programs low-barrier, flexible, and responsive to the needs of our community.

Whether you can come regularly or just occasionally, your time and presence truly make a difference. Have questions? Contact us below!

What Volunteers Do

Volunteer tutors work one-on-one or in small groups with adult learners to:

  • Practice conversational English
  • Support reading, writing, and listening skills
  • Prepare for U.S. citizenship tests and interviews
  • Help students study for driver’s license exams
  • Build confidence through friendly, real-world conversation

No formal teaching experience is required. We provide books, flashcards, games, conversation prompts, and hands-on teaching materials (“realia”) to support learners at all levels, from beginners to advanced speakers.

Come Visit Us

You’re welcome to stop by any Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday evening—we don’t close for holidays. Come meet our students, experience the space, and see if our program feels like a good fit for you.

If you enjoy a community-centered, informal, and sometimes changeable environment, you may find our little program deeply rewarding.

We would love to welcome you.

When & Where

Program Hours:
Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings
6:00–8:00 PM (most arrive by 6:30 PM)

Many volunteers find that one hour is a manageable and meaningful way to participate, though you’re welcome to come earlier or stay later if your schedule allows.

Location:
The Meeting Place
1101 Eastside St. SE, Suite C
Olympia, WA 98501

A Flexible, Low-Barrier Program

We strive to remove obstacles to participation for both students and volunteers. There are no required attendance commitments—come when you’re able. Some volunteers join us weekly, others periodically. All levels of involvement are valued. We also welcome children in our space. Childcare should never be a barrier to learning or volunteering. We provide a cozy area with toys and games, and some children choose to participate in language learning alongside their parents.

Getting Started as a Tutor

New volunteers are invited to:

  1. Observe existing student-tutor pairings
  2. Jump in and begin engaging directly with students

Our Program Coordinator is available to offer guidance and support, and we host monthly tutor in-service sessions to build skills and share best practices. In-services alternate between:

  • First Saturday of the month, 10:00–11:00 AM
  • Second Tuesday of the month, 6:30–7:30 PM

January 2026 In-Service: Tuesday, January 13 at 6:30 PM
